The cover needs to be visually pleasing and easy to recognise but it also needs to be printable.
Most people are used to playing with images and text and can make a cover image but for printing you need the colours to be in CMYK. All printers work in 4 colours (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) and they also require you to provide the cover image with a ink usage below 240%. (this means that if you print all four colours at 100% to make black your percentage ink usage is 400%)Most home software will not tell you the ink usage.

You can buy photos from many online sites and these will come with a license for their usage.
